Beware: All Loupes are not created equal.
Understanding quality differences before purchasing, can save the professional frustration, eye strain, mistakes and money.
Loupes have rapidly become a preferred way of "seeing" in the medical, dental and veterinarian sciences. It is critical that the loupes portray an accurate, precise, distortion free view. With the flood of inexpensive and inferior quality loupes on the market, many professionals are confused. Loupes may look identical but have varying degrees of optical quality and clarity. Figure A is the original view by the naked eye, Figure B shows the view through inferior quality loupes, Figure C shows the view through high quality loupes. The most common signs of poor quality loupes are low resolution, chromatic aberration and spherical aberration:
-
Resolution is defined as an optical system's ability to form distinguishable images of objects separated by small distances and the ability to recognize fine detail. This is a must in medical, dental and veterinarian sciences.
-
Chromatic aberration refers to color distortion. Because each color has a different wavelength, uncorrected optics cause the various wavelengths to focus at different points in space. The first color to fall out of focus is blue. Notice the blue haze just to the side of the black lines in figure B. Tissue and color rendition is critical for any practitioner.
-
Spherical aberration refers to the images flatness. When viewed through loupes, an object that exhibits spherical aberrations would appear to be curved or spherical also depicted in figure B. Distortions of any kind are unacceptable especially in tight areas such as the ear canal.
